Who is behind the madness?
Hidden within the labyrinth of our costumes you might be able to find the tireless Master Seamstress, Margaret Bicknell, our MD at Thespis. She’s known around here as working faster than a sewing machine... and breaks down less regularly too!!
She won’t tell you about herself, mainly because she’s too busy talking brooches, buttons, and seams, but a BA History of Art major, completed at the UEA in the raging 80’s when the world was romping towards the millennia, Margaret was focused on what had been happening the past millennia. After various stints in picture restoration post finishing her degree, she decided for financial reasons (Purely she states because she had to eat!) to become a Chartered Accountant. Following a career in various accountancy firms which spanned 30 years, including a 5 years tenure aiding Peter Gabriel of Genesis fame.
Shortly after returning to Norfolk, she felt that it was time to go back to her roots. Her children had for ten years become involved with the Norfolk Youth Music Theatre in that time. Margaret had initially worked in the capacity of one of the group’s chaperones and then treasurer, but soon became involved in the costume side of things. Part of her degree included historical costume study, so she was back on familiar ground.
In 2008, she decided it was time to make the switch from accountant to costumier permanently and Thespis was born.
Her personal philosophy? To produce the absolute highest quality costumes for each show, and never to settle for second best. She hates cutting corners, evident so many ways, but namely in the fact Thespis is one of the VERY few Costumiers offering accurate footwear in their packages. IT MUST BE DONE sayeth Margaret.
For over 13 years now, Thespis‘s costumes can be seen in productions all over Europe as far afield as Iceland and Malta to name but a few, and Margaret has no intention of stopping there.
